First Stop - Buttonwillow, CA Mcdonald’s for gas and food. I didn’t eat much as I get sick eating then getting on the road. Maysie however, had a treat. I specifically asked for one of those kids cones that are like microscopic and 89 cents? Yeah Buttonwillow has the 89 cent cones but they are a lot bigger than microscopic. Needless to say, she was quite impressed herself. I guess everything is bigger in Buttonwillow, too.

Well we made it here just fine, I have some pics of here, more to come.
So hours after I posted my experience with the last couple roaches one came in through the patio door at about 2 AM after many beers and I left my guard down. It crawled in right under me even though I was drunkenly thinking I was guarding the door and watching TV and smoking at the same time. Seeing that J was fast asleep in the bedroom I knew I couldn’t let the bugger leave my sight otherwise I would never know what happened to it and I could never sleep again. So I chased it around the living room with my flip flop and trapped it with said flip flop, then piled boxes on top of it and around it creating a shield that the roach would not get me from across the room. I went to bed shortly after. In the morning J noticed my lovely sculpture in which I explained what happened and he was tasked with checking on it. Well it turns out I killed it with my strategy and it was dead snugly under my flip flop. Success! I felt quite triumphant and satisfied that I killed one by myself… but what will I do when the boxes of crap are all put away, we will hopefully never know.
I purchased a box of plug-in pest repellents today at Walgreens in hopes that I can plug it in out on the patio and the roaches will not come to the patio at night. I guess we will see tonight. They have not stopped showing up after dark since we got our stuff. I am just thankful they are only on the patio. And to be honest, it is the only complaint that I have about Austin, it is a very lovely city and missing my friends aside, I really do like it here. The roaches have to stop, and if the plug in things don’t work I will be getting borax soap flakes to trim the patio with as I heard that is also a repellant for patio roaches.
OK I have spotted my first cockroach last night - on our patio, I knew the day would come. This fucker was big and scary, about the size of my thumb. I saw it crawl around from the corner of my eye while outside - my first reaction was to run inside and slam the patio door behind me. That was achieved, then I observed the vermin through the patio sliding glass door with awe and disgust - and a side of HEEBY JEEBIES!
It happened to find an upside-down plastic lid full of honey mustard - garbage from our patio dinner about an hour before. I watched it perch on the side of the lid and feast on that honey mustard with all of its might - ugh. I watched its long disgusting feelers move with some kind of rabid excitement. Then when it got bored, it went in circles around the rim of the patio table around and around for about 10 minutes. Then, it climbed on my lighter. *SHUDDER SHUDDER SHUDDER*
I have named him mustard.
Mustard came back this evening, about the same time as last night. Ok so it probably isn’t the same roach but from this point on, they are all named mustard - until I see two mustards together at one time, in which case I may need to name one ketchup to keep with some kind of cuteness, then realize I am looking at two cockroaches and pass out on the spot.
Fuck I hate mustard.
I found this job today that I applied for.

Please wish me luck I so want them to call me!!!!!!!!
OMG. First J & I got in a huge argument over the air mattress not fitting back into the box. Then I went to return it at Walmart and they tell me they won’t do returns for air mattresses. The thing sucks! They said I could have the same one. I was like um.. this thing sucks. Why would I want it again? They said that was their policy. I could have picked another for equal or lesser value but I already had the most expensive one. So I got a new one and I put it on Craigslist.
Then I got home and the movers were just showing up. That went fine they were in an out in an hour. J hoisted the TV up onto the entertainment center and it fell to the ground. It looked like it was fine. We plugged it in and hooked it up. Now everyone on TV is green. This is extremely disappointing since we can’t really afford a replacement and we just got a yr of satellite TV. We then ordered pizza which was fine but we opened the box of cinnomon twists and they forgot the icing. Then a huge cricket (thats being hopeful) walked into the house and I stood on a chair screaming bloody murder - then it walked on out of the house. I watched it leave. Well about 15 minutes later J gets into bed and he says its in the bed now. WTF?I screamed more bloody murder and hid in the corner of the spare room until he killed it.
Yeah, today sucked.
So J promised to take me on the town then he says he wants to “rest” and I know what that means. Now it is almost 10 and he is out like a light in the french quarter while I am sitting alone with my computer talking to other losers. Just kidding Ben.
We made it to Austin on Saturday night at about 11. What an adventure that was! We left on Thursday morning and drove to Los Angeles and slept at J’s best friends house. It was a gorgeous house so that was quite fun. Friday morning we had a long drive of 12 hours ahead. We drove all the way through Arizona and New Mexico. We stopped in the following places: Quartzsite, AZ, Tucson, AZ, and Las Cruces, NM. We ended up staying in a town called Las Cruces. It was a decent place. Our motel happened to be across from a bar and grill so we spent the rest of the night there eating and drinking (We were starving because we didn’t eat all day) The people there were nice but let me just tell you that New Mexico has a whole lot of nothing! It was a lot of rocks, and brown, and more rocks, for hours! However the one funny thing I found about NM is that they have plenty of billboards for moccasins. I got laughs out of that. Do people really buy that many moccasins?
We got out of NM later than we wanted to on Saturday, about 11 o’clock local time. We got to El Paso about half an hour later and one of the fun parts was basically driving along the Mexican border for about an hour. Mind you that from the highway you can’t really see Mexico (Well you see lots of shrubbery out there). We made a stop in Fort Stockton, TX and in Junction, TX. We made it to Austin at about 11 at night local time and we were pooped to say the least. However I know a few people from Austin and we had some recommendations for food. First stop on Saturday night was a place called Pluckers. Basically a wing place. It was quite delicious and they have tons of different kinds of sauces and shit! Hmm On Sunday for lunch we went to Rudy’s, a standard BBQ joint (people say its the best). The thing I find interesting here is that you order your food by the pound and you don’t order a bbq chicken sandwich. You order the chicken (1/4 lb for example) then they give you some bread and you can make your own if you feel like it. I find it funny. I did also find it very delicious, so who am I to complain? WE also have scoped out the Walmart and HEB (the local grocery store) - the grocery stores are huge! And groceries are amazingly cheap!
Examples:
Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Pint: San Mateo $4.99 Austin $2.85
JennieO Extra Lean Turkey Bacon San Mateo $3.29 Austin $1.99
2 lbs of chicken! San Mateo a billion dollars Austin $3.15
Pictures to come……(Of Austin, not my groceries!)
